What Happens When You Skip the Checklist
I'm a quality and brand compliance manager at an office furniture company. I review every desk before it reaches a customer—roughly 2,400 units a year. Step 6: Route Cables With a Service Loop
Before you bolt on the cable tray, route the controller cable and the power cord with a service loop—extra length that hangs below the tray. When the desk is at standing height, the cables should have slack. If they pull tight, the controller cable can disconnect from the motor. That's the cause of the classic 'desk dies halfway up' complaint.
Zip ties are fine. Just don't cinch the cables so tight that they can't move. And if you're using a surge protector, mount it on the underside of the desk; don't let it dangle at foot level. Also make sure the cable tray doesn't block the lifting columns' vertical movement. I've seen one where the tray had to be repositioned before the desk could reach standing height.
Step 7: Run Two Full Lift Cycles
Plug in the desk, set the controller to the lowest height, then the highest. Let it run two full cycles without stopping. Listen for grinding, clicking, or a change in motor pitch. Watch the two columns move at roughly the same speed. If one side lags, stops, or shows an error code, call support before you put a monitor arm on it.
After the cycles, test the memory presets. Set one low and one high, then press each preset to confirm the desk returns to the same position. Variation of more than 0.2 inch is worth investigating. Then put a small level on the desktop. If it's off, adjust the feet. A level desk is more important than most people think.

The mistakes I see most often: measuring the desktop at the wrong point, mixing screws from different kits, skipping the anti-collision test, and assuming 'same model' means 'same dimensions.'
